It is not a large sum, but it is the most common small surprise on this route — and a $80 tour with entry included can work out cheaper than an $80 tour without. Read the inclusions rather than the headline.

Two: how big is the coach?

The mass-market departures run full-size coaches and fill them. The deepest-reviewed option carries 4.8 from 27,357 reviews, which is an extraordinary sample and tells you the operation is reliable — but it is not intimate.

Small-group alternatives exist at around $150, roughly double the coach price for a materially different day: fewer people, more flexibility, and generally more time where you want it rather than where the schedule wants it. Whether that is worth $70 depends entirely on how you feel about coaches.

Three: what fills the driving hours?

This is the one that decides most people’s choice, and it is the reason the good tours are good.

You cannot avoid roughly six hours on the road. What the operators do with them varies:

• Galway city — two hours in the west’s best small city, on most itineraries. The single most common addition, and the most useful.
• The Burren — the limestone pavement is genuinely strange country and worth the stop; it is not filler.

And one that is not a coach at all. A rail tour runs the long leg by train instead of motorway, pairing the cliffs with Bunratty Castle, at $173 and 4.8 from 151 reviews. It is roughly twice the price of a coach and it removes most of the road. For anyone who genuinely dislikes long bus journeys, it is the option worth knowing exists — and almost nobody mentions it.
